Have Your Say: East Lothian's Poverty PlanIs our key outcome on good jobs that pay fairly the right one?
Good, fairly paid jobs provide a sustainable route out of poverty. Work offers community and value, and should pay a fair wage that enables people to support their lifestyle.
Through this outcome we will provide support and opportunities for people to gain the skills needed to enter and sustain employment. We will tailor this support based on people’s needs, and target groups who will need more support.
This fits well with our climate change priority too. Prioritising good jobs - and defining good as also good for our environment. Across renewable energy, heat exchange and circular economy can create new job opportunities, the latter especially in areas such as repair, remanufacturing, and recycling. This can provide employment and income opportunities for those experiencing poverty. Additionally, the cost savings associated with a circular economy can stimulate economic growth and create new business opportunities.
I think so, yes. From your list of improvements 4. is to prioritise fair work/job creation, capitalising on Community Wealth Building & the role of anchor orgs to support. I'm leading on CWB for the Council and as well as managing the pillars/anchors, will be focusing on procurement/economic development for this coming year, the ultimate aim of which is job creation. The fair work pillar seeks to make sure jobs are flexible, target priority groups etc, and initial discussion with EL Works suggests a lot is already being done. The est of the fair work sub-group will bring in fellow anchors - NHS, QMU, Edinburgh College etc to ensure this is wide spread and best practice is being shared.
