Summary

Description

Growing and Changing is about hearing the voices of young people aged 15-18 who have experience of hardship and want to tackle inequalities and create change. This group will lead campaigns across PSG to gather the collective voice of young people tackling issues like education, employment, social work, housing and stigma. We will work with the other youth voices in the area (MSYP, PSG Youth Forum and school councils) to collectively drive the change to provide a better future for ourselves and the young people following us.

Location: Prestonpans and Port Seton with additional reach across the whole of PSG

Good idea to get young people with lived experience views of poverty

Already organisations embedded in PSG set up and ready to listen to young people voices on lots of matters so not much need for this costly duplication

This group plans to compliment the work going on around PSG to gather collective the youth voice. What we bring is an often unheard age group (15-18) who have experience of poverty and hardship. They want to use their experiences to change the local area to better meet the needs to children going through similar experiences. We have already had discussions around the long terms and systematic changes that need to occur to reduce the burden of poverty on young people and how this can be changed at a local level.
The group have already expressed that their experiences and stigma of coming from a deprivation have made them feel unheard and ignored.
We want to empower ALL youth voice and have discussed with others how this can be achieved in partnership with the current youth voice groups in the area.

Would like to see more detail on gaining input from young people who historically tend not to engage with youth groups or youth council. Resource costs seem low. Perhaps and increase to allow for incentives to encourage wider participation in focus groups or use of technology or app in gaining feedback.

They're already discussing the best ways to encourage as many people as possible to engage with them whether this is by events, social media, survey, apps or other means. We think their experience and creativity gives them the means to create new innovative ways to connect as well as utilising the more traditional routes. They will decide on the best medium depending on who they are trying to reach and the topic they're wanting input on.

The Growing and Changing members (aged 15-18) want to connect with as many young people in the area as possible and are already planning ways they can seeking input from, and feed into established youth groups as well as giving voice to those individuals who are not already represented. Some of them are the "young people who historically don't engage". They've already voiced how "unheard" they have felt in their lives and are passionate about helping others and ensuring others don't feel like they've felt. They want to focus on the long term changes that need to be made to support the needs of young people experiencing poverty.

We're also exploring other sources of funding to support the group and it's activities

Duplication Youth Council, Youth Forum – how will they build partnership and work together?

As a youth subgroup of the Working for Change Collective (a group led by those with lived experience of poverty working in partnership with representatives from the East Lothian Foodbank, NHS Lothian Public Health, East Lothian Council), they will be supported in this by the members of the group and the organisational reach of the partners to ensure they are able to access what they need to achieve this.
